Here is a free plug-in for IE and Mozilla/Firefox that allows you put a rcih text editor into a web form: Cross-Browser Rich Text Editor. This should be great for lots of content management applications. It is also free in that there is no license whatsoever.
If you want a commercial rich text editor, I recommend Ektron’s tools.
Webmonkey: The Web Developer’s Resource is back! Looks like they will keep it alive with a lower frequency of updates to the site. I had reported their shut down a while ago. Glad to see them back in the Monkey saddle.
That day was a couple of weeks ago, apparently. Webmonkey ceases publication after a final round of layoffs.
The how-to content of the Webmonkey site is what got me rolling in my early efforts at developing web pages in the ’90s. I haven’t used the site as a reference in years but I’m bummed that it’s finally gone kaput.
I just came across this article from last year by Jeffrey Veen on the business value of web standards. Nice summary of the benefits.
The Web Developer Extension on chrispederick.com is an excellent tool for web designers who use Mozilla/Firebird. Definitely worth checking out. It improves upon the features in the PNH Toolbar.
editcss is a plugin for Mozilla/Firebird that allows you to view the stylesheet for the current page in a sidebar and then edit it, viewing the changes realtime in the browser window. Wow! What a great CSS design tool.
the Mid Pass Filter is a filter which passes external style sheets to version 5.x Internet Explorer for Windows browsers, but not to earlier/older browsers, nor to newer / more modern browsers
The benefit of this approach is that you can isolate your IE5.x/Win CSS workarounds in a single stylesheet, keeping your main stylesheet for other browsers a little cleaner. Found via Zeldman.
From David Crow: Website Accessibility in the Private Sector:
Ronald Milliman at Western Kentucky University has published a study analyzing private sector web sites for accessiblity. His results showed that 98.24% of the sites sampled failed the Bobby accessibility test for ADA Section 508 compatibility. The most interesting findings are that web designers were not knowledgeable of the exact techniques for making their site fully compliant (17.40% were knowledgeable) and that web designers did not feel that disabled users were a part of their target audience (42.07%).
